New Species Rare Turtle Found in Galapagos
SANTA CRUZ - Some scientists claim to have discovered a new species of tortoise giant Galapagos Islands, the Pacific Ocean.
The unfolding of this new species thanks to genetic data that is used by scientists to examine around 250 tortoises on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos Islands.
In fact, as mentioned Ministry of Environment of Ecuador, for a long time scientists believed that the two tortoise population on Santa Cruz Island is the same species.
The team of researchers led by biologist from Yale University, USA, Gisella Caccione, said species of tortoise named Chelonoidis donfaustoi a shell denser than other species.
The new species adds to the number of species of tortoise in the Galapagos Islands to 15, four of which have become extinct. Generally, these animals weighing 250 kilograms and live more than 100 years.
Scientists and environmental activists hope the discovery of new species that will help protect and preserve the turtles. Moreover, the species Chelonoidis donfaustoi only amounted to about 250 tigers.
